Rathbone Area Community and Schools: {not inclusive list}


The town was first settled around 1773. The town was formed from parts of three other pre-existing towns: Addison, Cameron, and Woodhull in 1856. The Canisteo River flows through the town past the communities of Cameron Mills, Derby Switch, and Rathbone. County Road 119 follows the course of the river.

Earliest settlers recorded finding clearings in the dense forests along the Canisteo River where Indians had previously cleared patches of forest and planted corn. First American settlements 1793 and 1795 by James Hadley and William Benham. It was a stage coach stop.

Rathbone RR Station
Town of Rathbone formed from Addison, Cameron and Woodhull- March 28, 1856. 1855 Station on the Erie Rail Road. 1918 Northrup School closed 3 weeks as result of diphtheria epidemic. 1972 flood causes widespread damage throughout the community. Amish School built on Derby Road 1996-1998 District 10 Northrup School restoration undertaken by Margaret Evans and Elizabeth Gaynor and when completed, the historic landmark was donated to the Middletown Historical Society

Rathbone One Room School
Northrup Hill School District 10 is a historic one-room school building located at Rathbone in Steuben County, New York. It was built about 1850 and is a vernacular Greek Revival style, one story, rectangular, gable roofed frame structure. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.[1] It is now used as a museum by the Middletown Historical Society.
